Help! I’m Anemic during Pregnancy.

Iron deficiency or anemia is super common in women and especially pregnant women. My blood work came back great my first two trimesters and sure enough, the third trimester had my red blood cell count low and my ferritin levels. I opted against iron infusions and chose to supplement the heck out of myself. It should be obvious, but I will say it anyway, this is not medical advice. It’s my experience using holistic and herbal supplements and I am in no way telling you what to do, just sharing what worked for me and could potentially help you too.

Need an Iron Boosting regiment? Here’s mine:

  1. Floradix Liquid Iron + Herbs - Liquid iron is gross. This one is pretty tolerable. Drink it with a straw so your teeth don’t stain. Also - take an actual vitamin C supplement with it for absorption. Sorry, your sugary, diluted grocery store OJ doesn’t count as enough vitamin C. You can juice fresh oranges, but most of the vitamin C is in the peel, so grate some in there and chug it down.

  2. MegaFood Blood Builder Iron Tabs - As with liquid iron, consume with a vitamin C tablet.

  3. Pomegranate Juice with Blackstrap Molasses - The pomegranate juice needs to be fresh or can be store bought as long as it’s not from concentrate. Add some blackstrap molasses, stir and drink before dinner.

  4. Beef Organs - As stated in my previous post about nausea, beef organs are so good during pregnancy. If you think about it, our ancestors ate actual beef organs. That’s an option too. But for most pregnant women, the supplement probably sounds better.

  5. Dr. Wholeness Blood Vitality - This is a ferritin specific vitamin. You know, ferritin, the protein complex that binds iron and acts as a major iron storage system?! I had no idea too, but luckily David explained it to me. I used this sparingly, and for only one month. The results would have been stronger, if I had taken it sooner.

Because we are huge proponents of food as medicine, take a look at what you are eating for iron as well. Bison, lightly cooked spinach, eggs, and dried apricots are just a few items to add into your diet.

Here’s to holistic,

Megan
