Holistic Acid Reflux Tamers

There’s an old wives’ tale that a baby in utero with a full head of hair will cause a serious case of heartburn and acid reflux during pregnancy. Well, it was true for me. My baby girl was born with a full head of hair and my heartburn woes began pretty early on and stayed with me to the end. No matter what I ate, it was my constant companion. It also doesn’t help that your stomach is squished flat by your uterus, and your intestines scatter to fit wherever they can. I did, however, find a few holistic solutions that helped me keep it tame.

  1. Papaya Enzymes - My favorite brand is American Health. I tried a few different brands, and this one has my vote for effectiveness and clean ingredients.

  2. Almond Milk - Califia brand unsweetened almond milk, again for the effectiveness and clean ingredients. MALK is a close second, but such a tiny amount for the price. A few sips after meals helped with digestion and soothed any unwanted reflux.

  3. Green Cardamom pods with seeds - Whole Foods sells these in the spice section and be sure to get the whole pods with seeds. You’ll want to open the pod, collect the seeds, and eat them. This is also a great mint option for fresh breath!

  4. Coriander Powder - A tsp or so in hot water and drink like a tea.

If all else fails, there is of course Pepcid AC. I made it to 40 weeks and 5 days pregnant using these holistic options and only in my last 5 days did I turn to Pepcid as a last resort.

Here’s to holistic,

Megan
